Net primary production.

The total amount of energy produced by primary producers is called gross primary production (GPP).

Some of that energy is used by the producers for respiration; the remaining energy available to consumers is called net primary production (NPP).

NPP is dependent on evapotranspiration (temperature and moisture).

Tropical forest is the most productive terrestrial ecosystem in terms of NPP.
