Blackcaps placed in a funnel cage left marks indicating the direction in which they were trying to migrate. Young birds from Germany were oriented toward the southwest, their traditional wintering grounds in the Mediterranean.

Recently, some blackcaps from continental Europe started wintering in Britain; these birds had a migratory orientation toward the west (Britain), indicating different genetic migratory instincts between the 2 populations.
