Life cycle of a gymnosperm.

  1. Sporophytes bear cones.

  2. Pollen cones contain microsporangia with microsporocytes.

  3. Ovulate cones contain ovules, each with one megasporangium and a megasporocyte.

  4. Microsporocytes undergo meiosis and develop into male gametophytes (pollen grains).

  5. Megasporocytes undergoe meiosis to produce megaspores.

  6. A megaspore develops into a female gametophyte containing eggs.

  7. The pollen grain germinates a sperm cell which moves down the pollen tube to fertilize an egg to produce a zygote.

  8. The ovule becomes a seed: an embryo, food supply, and seed coat.
